125. Allan Darwell HERRIOT JP+ was C of E (Berwick Parish Church) from 1920. He was born on 23 Aug 1920 in Castle Ter., Berwick-Upon-Tweed. From 1939 he was aTimber Importer & Manufacturer (Allan Bros Ltd).. He served in the military in 1941. He owned Market Gardens (part) & The Garden House from 1950 in Horncliffe, Berwick. He retired in 1986 in from Allan Bros Ltd. He was living 1920- in Berwick, Army (UK,India,Middle East,Italy,Greece), Horncliffe. He was educated Cargilfield School & Fettes College 1930 to 1939 in Edinburgh after Berwick. He was ill with arthritis & deafness before2000. At Fettes:head of house,captain of boxing,1st XV 1937-39,1st XI 1938 & 39.

War service:RAPC 1941-42, Commissioned 7th Gurkha Rifles Indian Army 1942,with
2nd Bn in Middle East & Italy & Greece until 1945.Demobbed a Captain.

Joined Allan Bros Ltd in 1939 & on death of father became Joint M.D.with uncle David Herriot,on whose retirement became Ch'man & M.D..After selling A.B.Ltd to May & Hassel plc in 1974 was also a director of M & H..Retired 1986.

Sheriff of Berwick-upon-Tweed 1968-69.

Active Berwick Rotary Club and Holy Trinity Parish Church and Local Employment Committee.

Magistrate (J.P.)1948-1990, Chairman final five Years.
2004 stopped driving car.
2005 still fishes from boats.

Allan Darwell HERRIOT JP+ and Patience Dorothy Verrty (Paddy) ANDERSON+ were married on 4 May 1948 in Jesmond Parish Church. They lived inThe Garden House in Horncliffe from 1950. Patience Dorothy Verrty (Paddy) ANDERSON+ (daughter of Col. William ANDERSON CB,DSO,MC,TD,ADC+ and Elisabeth Gladys ROBB+) was born on 4 Sep 1920 in Newcastle Upon Tyne. She died on 13 Oct 1995 in Garden House, Horncliffe. She was buried on 20 Oct 1995 in Morton Hall, Edinburgh..Berwick Parish Church Garden of Remembrance.. She was Housewife. She was educated 1925 to1936 in Newcastle & Nr Oxford. She was C of E. She served in the military WW2 in WRNS, commissioned. She was living Pre 1932 in Wylam Hall, Northumberlan, then in Newcastle, then in Bamburgh. 11 Apr 1942 married Lt.Cmdr.J.O.Edgar RN,who was presumed lost in submarine HMS Thunderbolt 6 months later. Remained lifelong friend of Betty Boycott (nee Edgar),her brother & sister and the ex-in-laws. No issue.

Lovely & unselfish Lady,who worked in many ways for the underprivileged & unfortunate.

1939-45 war; was a cypher officer, first served in Newcastle then Rosyth, where she (and others) met the future Duke of Edinburgh.

Was blessed with 8 adored grandchildren. 2nd stroke was final. Allan Darwell HERRIOT JP+ and Patience Dorothy Verrty (Paddy) ANDERSON+ had the following children:

Judith Elizabeth (Judi) HERRIOT was born on 22 May 1949 in Berwick-upon-Tweed. She was educated in Horncliffe Primary, Craigmount, Casterton, St Goderick College. She was Computer buff, in Newcastle, Edinburgh, Berwick, NZ, Worcester. She was C of E.
