126. Joan Marion HERRIOT+ was born on 17 Feb 1923 in Hopeville, Berwick-Upon-Tweed. She was educated from 1932 in home with Governess, at Longridge Towers, Queen Ethelburgas, Edinburgh Coll of Domestic Science.. About 1940 she was Physiotherapist trained at Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.. She emigrated in 1960 from UK to Australia (arrived Melboune 16.8.1960).. Between 1973 and 86 she was teacher at school for children with reading disabilities, Melbourne.. She was living in Melbourne (2 houses), Apollo Bay, Colac, Vic.. She served in the military in WW2 in Cattrick UK, Egypt, Palestine as a Physiotherapist.. Shared family life with Phil until his death.

Moved house to Yarrambat on N outskirts of Melbourne with 10 acres, 11 resident kangaroos and Ian & family next door.

1986 - 90 did voluntary work with people diagnosed with cancer.

192 moved to Apollo Bay. 2003 moved to Colac.

Joan Marion HERRIOT+ and Philip Whiteside MACLAGAN+ were married on 22 Dec 1947 in Parish Church, Berwick-Upon-Tweed. Philip Whiteside MACLAGAN+ (son of Dr Philip Whiteside MACLAGAN , MC+ and Jane (Jeanie) Scott ROBINSON) was born on 26 Mar 1922 in 2 Love Lane, Berwick-Upon-Tweed. He emigrated in 1960 from UK to Melbourne, Australia (arrived 16.8.1960).. He was ill with Leukaemia. in 1968 in Melbourne. He died on 23 Jul 1972 in Melbourne. He was Mechanical Engineer, West Bromwich (Wolseley), Crewe (Rolls Royce), Melbourne. in Melbourne latterly Lecturer, Caulfield Tech Coll... He was living in Berwick, India, Burma, Castle Bromwich, Nantwich, Tilston, Melbourne.. He was educated Longridge Towers, Cargilfield, Fettes College, Loughborough College.. He served in the military in WW2 in Black Watch aged 17. 14th Punjab Regt (parachutist. 1st Chindits, Burma. Adj Regt Centre. Major). At Fettes was in 1st XV for 2 seasons and was Head of his House, Mordun.

Experience of 1st Chindit campaign seriously damaged his health (they were sent far behind Japanese lines and ultimately left to there own resources). His Quartermaster in Sialkot was an entertaining sheep farmer of Bonchester Bridge, Charlie Douglas.

Before leaving Castle Bromwich bought first car, an improvement on a pedal bike.
Left Rolls Royce for health reasons and moved to 10 acres holding near Tilston, Cheshire (cows, pigs, hens, dog kennels).

Arived in Australia on £10 emigration package.
Tough in hostel for short time then bought 196 Mont Albert Road, Melbourne. First employed at Macdonalds Engineering.

Soon he and Joan became involved in the Anti - Apartheid movement, instigating a small organization Against Racial Discrimination.
