75. Ald. James Allan HERRIOT JP+ was born in 1885 in Berwick-upon-Tweed. He served in the military between 1914 and 18 in UK & France both in trenches and at Le Touquet as comdt of Lewis Gun School. He was living from 1920 in Hopeville, Castle Terrace, Berwick. He died in Dec 1946 in Hopeville, Berwick-Upon-Tweed. He was buried in Jan 1947 in Berwick Cemetry. He was educated from 1995 in Edinburgh, Cargilfield School & Fettes College. Cambridge Uni., Clare College.. He was Timber Importer & Joinery Manufacturer, Mayor Of Berwick. He was C. of E.. All business life with Allan Bros,becoming Joint M.D.in1919 with Mr Caverhill on death of his father David.(Mr Caverhill was father of Allan Melville,Writer & Broadcaster.)On Mr Caverhill's death in 1925 he became Ch'man & M.D. until his own
death 1946.

1914-18 war commissioned 5th Northumberland Fus..Served in trenches in France.Latterly Comdt Lewis Gun School,Le Touquet.Demobbed a major.

Sheriff and Mayor of Berwick-upon-Tweed. Magistrate (J.P.).

Active B'k Rotary Club and on Town Council (Alderman)

.Married secondly Elisabeth Foster Banks in 1936.

1939-45 war:started and commanded local Air Force Cadets,which still thrives 1999.

Sports:cricket,rugger,hockey,golf,tennis,fishing & shooting.

Ald. James Allan HERRIOT JP+ and Gladys Marion DARWELL+ were married in 1919. Gladys Marion DARWELL+ (daughter of George DARWELL+ and Marion (Minnie) Bogue ALDER+) was born in 1893 in N.Northumberland. She was living from 1920 in Hopeville, Berwick-Upon-Tweed. She died on 6 Jun 1933 in Hopeville, Berwick-Upon-Tweed of lobar pneumonia. She was buried in 1933 in Berwick Cemetry. She was Housewife. She was C. of E.. A friendly beauty,who gently turned many heads and loved children."Lady who never says NO" to children.

Died aged 40 of unexpected pneumonia,often deadly in 1933. That happened iimmediately after having an ear abscess cured with the assistance of a Specialist from Edinburgh.

At Hopeville had 2 living -in staff, a cook/househeeper and a housemaid. Ald. James Allan HERRIOT JP+ and Gladys Marion DARWELL+ had the following children:

Ald. James Allan HERRIOT JP+ and Elizabeth Forster (Banko) BANKS were married in 1936 in London. Elizabeth Forster (Banko) BANKS was born on 25 Dec 1900 in Tyneside. She died in 1986 in Hythe. She was buried in Ashes At Berwick Cemetry. She was Teacher & Companion. Was governess to McCreaths of Gainslaw ,Nr Paxton until 1930.



Then became companion to a rich lady Nr Hythe & governess to her son,later his executor,when rich lady died.



When widowed,went to live in & around Hythe,where bought and sold houses profitably.
