Either he or his brother Dr Philip Whiteside(1) Maclagan is likely to have been the original owner of the Maclagans' Laennec Style Stethoscope, made from the timbers of the Royal Infirmary, Infirmary Street, Edinburgh, which was revamped in 1879. It is now displayed in the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh thanks to the generosity and thoughtfulness of present day Dr Jimmy Mitchell, to whom it was passed on at the instigation of the younger generation after Dr P W Maclagan MD MC died in 1975.

This was the style of the original wooden stethoscope about 9" long, invented by French Physician Laennec in 1819.
