Douglas MACLAGAN MD+ was born on 17 Apr 1812 in Edinburgh.
Between 1869 and 1896 he was a Professor of Medical Jurisprudence & Public Health
in Edinburgh University. He died on 5 Apr 1900 in Edinburgh.
He was living in Edinburgh. He was a President of both the Royal
College of Physicians & of Surgeons in Edinburgh. Knighted in 1880
He was Established Church of Scotland. Either he or his brother
Dr Philip Whiteside(1) Maclagan is likely to have been the original owner of
the Maclagans' Laennec Style Stethoscope, made from the timbers of the Royal
Infirmary, Infirmary Street, Edinburgh, which was revamped in 1879. It is now
displayed in the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh thanks to the generosity
and thoughtfulness of present day Dr Jimmy Mitchell, to whom it was passed on
at the instigation of the younger generation after Dr P W Maclagan MD MC died
in 1975.
