12. Archbishop of York William DALRYMPLE (MACLAGAN)+ was born on 18 Jun 1826 in 22 George Street, Edinburgh. He was educated between 1834 and 1844 in Royal High School, Edinburgh. He served in the military between 1844 and 49 in in Madras army, India as Lieut.(resigned for ill health). He received a degree between 1852 and 56 in mathematics at Peterhouse College, Cambridge. In 1856 he was a Deacon, C of E. 1869 Rector of Newington. 1875 Vicar of Kensington. Between 1878 and 91 he was a Bishop of Lichfield. Between 1891 and 1908 he was an Archbishop of York. He died on 19 Sep 1910. He was C. of E.. If searching the web about him, it may be relevant that he is recorded in the records at York as the 88th Archbisop thereof thus; "WILLIAM DALRYMPLE, 1891-1908",
not as MACLAGAN.

His name is connected with two well-known hymns, "Bread of heaven" and "The Saints of God". He composed the tune of the former and words of the latter.

Archbishop of York William DALRYMPLE (MACLAGAN)+ and Sarah Kate CLAPHAM were married in 1860. Sarah Kate CLAPHAM was born in 1836. She died in 1864. Archbishop of York William DALRYMPLE (MACLAGAN)+ and Sarah Kate CLAPHAM had the following children:
